The fate of the Milky Way and Andromeda, long predicted to collide in five billion years, is now a matter of probability, thanks to new research. The study, published in Nature Astronomy, challenges the notion of an inevitable cosmic merger, instead presenting a complex interplay of gravity, measurements, and smaller neighboring galaxies. The research team, led by Till Sawala of the University of Helsinki, modeled the Milky Way, Andromeda, Triangulum galaxy M33, and the Large Magellanic Cloud using data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the European Space Agency's Gaia mission. By sampling a broad range of plausible positions, velocities, and masses, they ran 50,000 simulations, revealing a dynamic and uncertain future for these galaxies.

The inclusion of M33 and the Large Magellanic Cloud significantly altered the outcome. M33's gravity reduced Andromeda's sideways motion, increasing the likelihood of a merger. Conversely, the Large Magellanic Cloud's pull changed the Milky Way's motion, adding movement outside the original orbital plane, thus reducing the chances of a merger.

The simulations produced two distinct outcomes. In half of the cases, the galaxies passed close enough for their orbits to decay, leading to a merger after an initial encounter, forming an intermediate-mass elliptical galaxy. In the remaining cases, the galaxies never approached within a certain distance, preventing a close pass and the necessary dynamical friction for a merger.

Alis Deason of Durham University's Institute for Computational Cosmology emphasizes the significance of these findings, stating that they significantly alter our understanding of the galaxies' fate. The study challenges the previous prediction of a merger, suggesting a real chance of avoiding it entirely.

The outcome is highly sensitive to Andromeda's proper motion and the masses of all four galaxies. Precise observations will be crucial in narrowing down the possibilities, but the question of whether the Milky Way and Andromeda will merge remains unresolved.
