Xcel Energy: Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings in Colorado (2026)

Xcel Energy has announced that while no public safety power shutoffs (PSPS) are expected in Colorado, enhanced powerline safety settings (EPSS) will be activated across eastern Colorado over the next 48-72 hours to mitigate wildfire risk. This decision comes after consulting with the National Weather Service, who indicated that conditions are unlikely to meet PSPS criteria. However, the company has warned that wind-driven power cuts are still possible and operational adjustments may be made as conditions warrant. These fire safety blackouts, implemented in the wake of the Marshall Fire, have impacted hundreds of thousands of customers on Colorado's Front Range on at least two other occasions this season. The outages have caused frustration among several businesses, with some residents even purchasing generators to stay ahead of any future outages. Critical fire weather conditions will persist for the next three days for much of the eastern plains and the southern I-25 corridor. The National Weather Service says Tuesday’s windstorm is expected to be the most powerful out of this system, with brief pockets of 60 mph gusts and sustained winds of 30-40 mph. Xcel Energy has provided steps to prepare for a power outage, including setting your fridge and freezer to the coldest setting, turning off or unplugging electrical appliances, and designating a dedicated outdoor space for generators and grills. But here's where it gets controversial: some Boulder residents are purchasing generators to stay ahead of any future outages, while others are frustrated by the frequent power outages. And this is the part most people miss: while EPSS can help mitigate the risk of ignition, it may also lead to unplanned and longer-lasting outages due to the need for visual inspections before service restoration. So, what do you think? Are these power outages necessary for public safety, or are they an overreaction? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
